The enhanced security BSI kitemark scheme incorporating the additional vulnerability requirements for cylinders covered by BS 3621:2007 and the following elements of attack resistance within EN 1303:2005; Drill resistant Grade 2, torque resistance of plug/cylinder relevant to attack resistance Grade 2 (30 Newtons).

PAS 24 requires all cylinders to be kitemarked. In addition to this, the complete door set in its frame must pass 2 additional cylinder attack; one with a mole grip and one with a screw, by an accredited testing agency, to guarantee that both the hardware and cylinder of the door can withstand a manual attack lasting 3 minutes – the average amount of time it is estimated that a burglar or opportunist thief will spend trying to break into a property.

Net2 PaxLock comes ready to fit a standard Euro profile lock case. It communicates with the Net2 server PC using the low power and secure wireless technology of Net2Air. Net2 PaxLock is designed for use with the Net2Air USB bridge or the Net2Air Ethernet bridge to give the advantages of a wireless networked access control system. Net2 PaxLock is simple to use and fast to fit because it is not wired into a mains power source; it is ideal for internal doors.

There are many solutions available. some costing hundreds of pounds!

Highly recommended is the Evolution solid Stainless Handle for PVC Doors made by Mila

Whilst there is a problem with the locks being snapped mainly in West Yorkshire, with the many details available on sites such as Youtube, this problem may spread to Manchester, Stockport, Wilmslow, Cheadle and Macclesfield

The first and most important thing to check is the projection of the cylinder from the handle ( how far the cylinder, or barrel sticks out) If there is more than 5 mm of the cylinder visible, then your home is at great risk!

The video entry system was a few years old and was already broken due to wear and tear.
The elderly may feel more vulnerable to some crimes, although they are actually less likely to become victims.

Get a personal alarm to use in emergencies, e.g. if you trip over at home

Don’t keep large amounts of money at home, try to use a bank account instead

Look after your pension book and other bank cards etc. carefully – consider a small domestic safe

Fit door chains and spy holes. do not feel obliged to answer the door to people you do not know.

Many councils and have security schemes that are aimed at older and more vulnerable people – try asking them for some advice

Be aware about the risk of bogus callers and learn how to spot them

'Bogus callers', 'distraction burglary or 'doorstep crime' are crimes that a lot of vulnerable people fear. Follow our advice so that you can spot the signs of whether or not an unexpected caller to your home is genuine.

‘Bogus callers’, ‘distraction burglary or ‘doorstep crime’ are crimes that a lot of vulnerable people fear. Follow our advice so that you can spot the signs of whether or not an unexpected caller to your home is genuine.

Top tips for deterring distraction burglars

Check ID Carefully – check the phone number matches the number in the yellow pages, phone Directory Enquiries or keep a list of useful numbers such as electricity and gas companies near your front door. Don’t feel embarrassed leaving them on the doorstep WITH THE DOOR CLOSED AND LOCKED – genuine employees will not mind their ID to be checked.

Sign up to the Priority Services Register with your utility providers. This will give you a unique password, among other things, that only you and they know – so you can be sure people at the door are who they say they are.

Keep your garden preened and the front of your house looking neat – bogus callers are more likely to target houses which look unkempt as they think you’re less likely to care.

Make sure you use your door chain when answering the door and keep it on until you’ve seen official identification – if you don’t already have a door chain & viewer contact your local Master Locksmiths Association Member they are CRB Checked

Make sure your back door is locked if you go to answer your front door – thieves can work in pairs with one distracting you while the other slips in the back.

Don’t keep large amounts of money in your home. If in doubt, keep them out.

Only let them in when you have double checked that they are a genuine caller.

If you think you have been targeted by a distraction burglary tell a friend, neighbour, caretaker, Neighbourhood Watch representative and the police.

Remember:

Most people who come to your door will be genuine callers, but it’s always best to make sure.

Fit a door chain or spy hole to help you check who the caller is.

If you were not expecting someone to call, a genuine caller will not mind waiting outside while you contact their company. Find the number in the phone book or on your latest phone bill. Most companies have a password scheme. If you are not happy do not let them in.

Genuine delivery personnel usually have uniforms and liveried vehicles and should not need to come into your home. Charity collectors will have identification and will not be offended if you ask to see it.

If you become uncomfortable after you have let someone into your home, even if it’s someone you know, make excuses and leave. Go to a neighbour’s house or ask a friend to come back home with you.

Did you know…?

In 4% of burglaries, thieves used a false pretence to gain entry to a property

Follow the ‘Lock, Stop, Chain and Check’ procedure:

Lock – Keep your front and back doors locked, even when at home

Stop – Are you expecting anyone?

Chain – If you decide to open the door, put the door chain on first

Check – Ask for the caller’s ID and check it by phone
