Did you know…?
In 4% of burglaries, thieves used a false pretence to gain entry to a property
An entrepreneur attended an auction at which he succeeded in winning an old safe.
With dreams of a large fortune inside, he was told that the business from which the safe originated was so long defunct, that no one had the key. Undaunted, he called a Macclesfield locksmith to try to get the safe open.
The first Macclesfield locksmith told the entrepreneur that it would cost £50 to open the safe. However, tried as he might, he couldn’t open it, and told the wealthy man that he had lost his money in buying the safe.
The entrepreneur then contacted another locksmith, based in Stockport a crusty, bent old man with three days’ growth of white whiskers, who took a long look at the safe, noted its manufacturer and retired to his van. Shortly, he returned with a drill, a ruler, and a small, bent piece of metal.
The locksmith measured a few inches from the dial and marked an “x” at the “two o’clock” mark. It took more than an hour for the old man to drill through the safe’s door. He then took the bent metal, hooked it through the hole and fished around a few moments until a loud “CLICK” was heard. Turning the handle the door swung open slowly.
The safe was empty.
Disappointed, the entrepreneur turned to the locksmith and asked the charge for opening the safe.
“£160,” replied the locksmith.
“£160?!” shouted the businessman, “That’s outrageous! The other man only wanted£50! I want an itemized bill for it!”
“Okay.” The locksmith turned on his heel and returned to his van. A few minutes later, the entrepreneur was presented with a dirty piece of paper upon which the locksmith had written:
£25 drilling hole
£135 knowing where to drill

There are many things to do to reduce the chances of being burgled.
Remember some important rules to help keep your family and Macclesfield property safe
Firstly have a look at your house and property from the street/ footpath from all angles. See what can be viewed – big flatscreen TV, hi-fi, X Box etc. Consider net curtains or blinds
The most important thing is to stop any unwanted visitors gaining access to your rear gardens. Good walls, fences, hedges and gates.
Chain up ladders to stop them being used for access.
Check household insurance documents for specification of locks

You may have seen recent reports on television news or in the newspapers of a weakness in the locks on uPVC doors. The weakness is currently being exploited by burglars in some areas of the UK, notably the West Yorkshire Police area. To our knowledge, such attacks are not yet common place in the Stockport, Macclesfield, Cheshire and south Manchester areas.
The problem, known as snapping, which is growing around the country, are various methods are used by the burglars using simple everyday tools, allowing them to exploit an inherent flaw in the design of these Euro Profile Cylinders. The cylinders, in many cases, can be overcome in a matter of seconds and although we know the methods used we will not disclose these methods in any detail, as a precaution against “copy-cat” burglaries.
The lock in question is not of any particular make, but is the type of lock fitted to the majority of uPVC, PVCu and some wooden doors throughout the world, it is commonly known as a Euro Profile Cylinder. It is the part which provides the key operation to the multi-point locking mechanism fitted to the door. No matter how secure or elaborate the multi-point locking mechanism is, if the cylinder is compromised the multi-point lock can be opened in seconds without difficulty.
All major Lock Manufacturers are now working hard to find solutions to the problem.
Currently there are limited products on the market to combat this form of attack. Two major lock manufacturers notably Mul-T-Lock and Squire have produced a new design of cylinder which ensures the cylinder snaps at a predetermined position leaving the door still secured and requiring the use of the correct key to unlock the door. Mul-T-Locks range of anti snapping cylinders are called ‘Break Secure’ and Squire’s range are called ‘Snapsafe’
Although this design of cylinder is still not 100% guaranteed to prevent all the methods of attack used on uPVC doors. It will prevent the most common methods slowing down the burglars attempts and making it considerably more difficult, therefore increasing the chance of him giving up.
In addition to these cylinders some manufacturers notably Squire and ERA are producing cylinder enhancers or cylinder security devices. Various designs are available to suit uPVC and composite doors these consist of a metal surround which is secured to the existing cylinder underneath the door handle. ERA’s range is possibly the most secure, with the designs securing through the door to sandwich the cylinder in place making it virtually impossible to remove the ‘snapped’ cylinder. These devices used in conjunction with a Break Secure or SnapSafe cylinder will ensure the methods currently being used are ineffective.
The risk of forced entry via the methods used is reduced if the cylinder fitted is of the correct size and properly fitted. However often when cylinders have been replaced in the past it is found that an incorrect size has been used leaving the door vulnerable. It is recommended that the euro profile cylinder should not protrude outside of the door furniture any more than 2-3mm.
Remember burglars always choose the easy option!
In order to ensure you do not become one of the many victims of this type of forced entry, review your current door cylinders now and consider upgrading your cylinders to the newly available ‘Break Secure’ or SnapSafe ranges currently available or fit an additional Cylinder Security Device or Enhancer to your existing cylinder.
In the meantime, ensure you deadlock your doors whenever your home is unattended. We also advise that a door chain be fitted and used on the main entrance door when the house is occupied and if uPVC doors are fitted to other areas consider fitting additional internal secondary bolts, such as “sash jammers”
Other sensible precautions include ensuring that any keys (particularly car keys) are not left where they can be found by burglars. (The most common method of car theft is by breaking into homes and stealing the keys). Other portable valuables should also be removed from vulnerable areas.
A safe will compliment any form of security to the property by reducing the risk of sentimental and valuable items being taken should a burglar gain entry. Securing small valuables can save a great deal of inconvenience and upset and it is recommended that you keep spare keys, passports, jewellery, cameras etc. locked in a safe.

There are several reasons why your uPVC door could be failing to lock correctly:
If the handle has been feeling a bit stiff and the key wont fully turn any more, chances are that your upvc door locking bolts are not fully throwing because the door is out of alignment. This can be caused by swelling and contracting of the upvc door at differing temperatures or from general wear and tear on the upvc door due to repeated slamming or hanging on the door itself. This can often be remedied by adjusting the hinges of the door to re-align the keeps in the frame. once the lock is operating smoothly without obstructions the key will turn.
You can get similar symptoms due to debris in the upvc door frame preventing the door from shutting true. Regular cleaning of dirt and stones out of the frame will prevent this.
PVC door will only lock from one side…
If you find that your upvc door only seems to lock from one side of the door and the other will not allow the key to turn, then you will need a replacement lock barrel.
If when you lift the handle, and you turn the key to lock, you are unable to remove the key. This is caused by the central cam of the lock cylinder slipping out of alignment. General causes seem to be due to worn keys and lock components often as a result of heavy use and substandard quality locks,
You will need to call your local locksmith to replace the cylinder with a new one of correct size.
This is a relatively quick job if there are no other complications.
Handle is spinning all the way round, not opening the door…
This is often the aftermath of not getting your upvc door adjusted when it has been feeling stiff.
Prolonged forcing of the handle puts massive strain on internal parts and eventually they WILL break!
You have broken the spindle inside the lock back box and will need either a replacement backbox or entire locking unit, depending on the type of multipoint lock fitted.
You will need to call a local Wilmslow locksmith to open the upvc door and order the new parts which can be pricey therefore it is important that you get your door adjusted when early symptoms of stiffness occur.
Lost Keys / Locked out…
This is definitely a job for an emergency locksmith,
DO NOT attempt to force the upvc door open as you may cause more serious damage to the multi-point lock. A Wilmslow locksmith should be able to pick or drill the lock to open the door cleanly without permanent damage. Once the upvc door is open the lock cylinder can be removed and a new one fitted.
Often, the cylinders fitted in new upvc doors are not the best quality and may not be suitable to satisfy your insurance requirements. Exterior door locks need to conform to home insurance security guidelines. These can be found here- insurance locking guidelines
In certain areas, there is a growing trend to gain entry through uPVC doors using a couple of techniques – Bumping the lock and Snapping the lock. there are a few bump and snap resistant locks available in the market to counter this growing trend. These upvc locks will be more expensive than bog standard ones, however provide considerably more protection against drilling, snapping and picking or bumping the lock. Typically a good quality cylinder costs around £30 +VAT expect to pay upwards of £50 +VAT for these Bump and snap resistant locks. At the moment there are not many instances of this type of burglary in Wilmslow, Cheadle & Macclesfield, but this will only increase with time.
There are many brands of lock that exceed the British Standard rating and offer incredible protection against unauthorised opening. These demand a high price but would be well worth investing in for protecting high risk premises.
The lock cylinder should not protrude more than 5mm from the handle of the door, ideally they should sit flush.
Locks that stick out from the face of the door more than 5mm are a considerable security flaw and you should contact a licensed Cheshire locksmith immediately to arrange the fitting of a correct sized lock.
Whether its a faulty uPVC door lock, a safe requiring servicing or a new access control system for your small business, Cusworth Master Locksmiths can give you cost effective solutions to your security needs.
